Conquering the small medieval villages of Drôme
Drôme is full of medieval villages that have preserved traces of their past. These are unmissable places, especially as they always offer breathtaking landscapes. Here are three magnificent villages that La Biscuiterie de Provence highly recommends you explore.
In the footsteps of knights at the Château de Suze-la-Rousse
Suze-la-Rousse is a small village in the Drôme that was once home to knights. As soon as you arrive in the village, you won't miss this imposing edifice: the fortress of Suze-la-Rousse. It's an old and spectacular military construction which, over time, was transformed into a residence in the 16th century. Thus, you'll discover a castle rich in character and history. Currently, the site houses the Wine University, offering various training courses.
The building is open to visitors and hosts various cultural events throughout the year, such as concerts, shows, etc., to entertain you.
The fortress offers magnificent views of the valley and its beautiful nature.
The Countess of Sévigné and the Château de Grignan
The medieval village of Grignan, nestled in the charming Drôme region, offers a timeless experience. At the heart of this locality stands majestically the Château de Grignan, a building steeped in history associated with the famous Countess of Sévigné. Wandering through the narrow streets, you'll be transported to a bygone era, imbued with medieval charm. The citadel, built in the 11th century, has undergone various architectural evolutions over the ages, reflecting the imprint of different periods.
Beyond its medieval heritage, this hilltop village in the Drôme offers a breathtaking natural setting. It provides spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding hills and lavender fields.
Visiting the Château de Grignan is therefore a must for your stay.
The Château des Adhémar in Montélimar, showcasing French heritage
Montélimar, an emblematic city in Drôme, captivates with its charm, combining heritage and a pleasant lifestyle. In the heart of this Provençal city stands the Château des Adhémar, a testament to a past history dating back to the 12th century. Perched on the heights, the castle offers breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings.
The Château, now owned by the Drôme Department, is an architectural gem. Its ramparts tell the story of successive eras, oscillating between functions as a residence, fortress, citadel, and even a prison. After meticulous restorations, it opened to the public in 1983. A visit to this exceptional site immerses visitors in the medieval world. This exploration is punctuated by games and activities, offering a fun experience for all ages.
